The Pike house built 1916-1917 by David Adler on North Lake Road in Lake Forest, Ill. After years upon years on the market, starting at about $10 million, this spectacular home was sold this past week for the serious steal of $4.1 million. The courtyard of this home is one of Adler’s most successfully designed — paved with a variety of stones from the beach front. At the center of the courtyard is the design of Adler’s signature star. Adler designed this villa in the classical ItalianĀ tradition, similar to the rectangular Cortile of the Cancelleria in Rome, designed by Donato Bramante. The interior is simple and concise, and reflects Adler’s love of symmetry. The sunken garden was planned with the help of landscape Architect Ralph Rodney Root.
